I know I did a post the other day but I felt I needed to post another, as I sit here drinking my post ride glass of milk I have a massive craving for Fig rolls something I have not had for a very long time and it reminded me of something from way back in the day when I used to ride all the time and I mean I rode every day at least 15-20 miles, we used to go through an amazing amount of food and one of our preferred calorie sources was the humble fig roll as it was cheap and packed full of energy sadly this was a time before the now common trail pack and all we had was the rear pockets of our cycling jerseys  which was not good for holding anything really as it generally bounced out so what we would do was wedge the packets of fig rolls in the spokes of our front wheels and use inertia to hold them in place, we would do 20-40 mile off road rides with fig rolls wedged in there until we were ready to sit and munch, and once half eaten would fit perfectly in our back pockets, I like how something so silly and simple made me chuckle to myself, anyhow back to today's ride.

Today's session did not start well and for some reason I threw up right before my ride and my chicken dinner was gone, this has happened a few times and I am trying to find out why I think it may have to be a doctors appointment, I set off out with the idea of doing a nice simple ride to break me in but I was magnetically drawn to point my bike up and do my new back lane route and things started off pretty well and the pace felt good, this time I did not spin as much on the climbs instead using a slow rpm to build strength at one point I was up and out of the saddle working it lol, sadly this harder work meant that as I reached the furthest point on that last climb my legs were just overloaded and I had to ease right back and when I turned off the main road I stopped and just sat for a few mins looking up at the stars and out across Plymouth something I have not done in many years and another thing that I have dearly missed.
From here there is one last short climb then it is some serious wahoo as I get to descend and get some of those hills back, according to my Garmin I reached 38 mph and then hit the flats back towards home.

All in all the ride felt good and yes I feel much stronger and a lot more confident, I am under no illusion I still have a hell of a lot of work to go but I am seriously on the right track, first way point is August and the first of two races this year, time will tell but right now I am rocking it and loving it.

  1. Sorry to hear you feel unwell Si, do get it checked out by a doctor if it's been happening for a while.

    Take it easy pal

  2. I love that fig story, so fun! I am relatively new to cycling (just one year in) and the idea of using my spokes to hold something sounds intriguing...may have to do some experimenting this year. :) Be well, Simon!
